The Corning Community School Board of Directors and the Villisca Community School Board of
Directors are partnering as Southwest Valley Schools to seek a highly visible and engaged
leader. We are looking for a candidate who will build strong relationships with students, staff,
and the community while understanding the unique needs of our district. The ideal candidate will
demonstrate decisive leadership and a commitment to promoting the success of Southwest
Valley Schools.
Southwest Valley is located in southwest Iowa and consists of two K-5 elementary buildings in
Villisca and Corning, a 6-8 middle school in Villisca, and a 9-12 high school in Corning. The
district employs 160 individuals and serves 670 students. Over the past seven years, we have
successfully passed bond referendums in both communities to update all facilities and build a
new elementary school in Corning, set to open for the 2025-2026 school year.
Our district takes great pride in offering strong academic and extracurricular programs,
supported by a dedicated staff committed to student success. Enarson Elementary has been
rated “Exceptional,” the middle school is “High Performing,” and both Corning Elementary and
the high school are rated “Acceptable” by the Iowa Performance Profile. Southwest Valley also
boasts award-winning student organizations such as FFA, FCCLA, and FBLA.
The communities of Corning and Villisca are just 14 miles apart and conveniently located within
90 minutes of Kansas City, Omaha, and Des Moines. Both towns offer great amenities,
including a community pool, aquatic center, two wellness centers, grocery stores, four banks,
several restaurants, and ten churches. Corning is also home to Adams County Speedway,
which hosts NASCAR dirt track racing.
Outdoor recreation is a big part of the area, with access to Lake Icaria, Lake Binder, Viking
Lake, Hacklebarney Recreation Area, and two golf courses. It’s always a great day to be a
