Superintendent's Message for December 2019

December has arrived and the school year is in full swing with many exciting things going on district wide.  This month we will be hosting four holiday concerts, dance performances, four home basketball games, and two board meetings.  The wrestling team will be on the road until after Christmas break, but will host three home meets in January.  The greenhouse at the high school is completed and will be operational in the next few weeks.

The holiday concerts begin on December 2nd with the 2nd-5th grade program at the SWV activity center.  The JK-1st grade concert for Corning Elementary is on December 5th at the high school auditorium at 7 p.m.  The middle school will be performing at the SWV middle school gym on December 12th at 7 p.m. and the high school will have their concert on the 19th at         7 p.m. in the high school auditorium.  Come out and support SWV schools and the fine arts programs!

Following the home basketball game against Shenandoah on December 3rd and again on the 16th following the boy’s game vs. Lenox, the SWV dance team will host an extravaganza for the public. They will also be in the state competition on December 7th in Des Moines.  Come out and support the dance team as they perform!

The Timberwolves basketball teams begin their winter seasons with road trips to Griswold on December 2nd and Mt. Ayr on the 6th.  They will host home games on the 3rd vs. Shenandoah, on the 10th vs. Nodaway Valley, on the 13th vs. Martensdale, and on the 17th vs. Lenox.   Come out and support the hoops teams!  New coaches for the basketball teams are Kyle Bashor leading the boy’s team and Michael Webb will lead the girl’s team.

The wrestling team will be on the road before the Christmas break with meets at Clarke on the 5th, Nodaway Valley on the 7th, Riverside on the 12th, Lenox on the 14th, and the POI conference meet on the 20th at Martensdale.  Coach Cody Konecne has the team fired up and ready to go this season!

Please check the calendar on the website www.southwestvalley.org for a complete listing of all the events.

The Villisca Phase 1 construction project is wrapping up.  The new heating units are being installed in the north classrooms and will be fired up soon.  We have elected to keep this area under construction the remaining part of this year so we can continue to improve this area for our students.  Not a part of the project, but a nice addition to Enarson Elementary, is the new smart boards installed recently.  These smart boards replace outdated equipment and have been a very nice addition to the south side classrooms.  The students and staff have done a great job adapting to limited space on the south side of the building.

The Phase 2 bids were received on November 14th and the school board will have a public hearing on December 12th to accept the bids.  We were very pleased with the bidding for Phase 2 and look forward to this part of the project beginning in late spring 2020.

The school year has been a great one to this point with many more bright days to come and student activities to attend.  I encourage you to support all activities, become a part of #Twolvesterritory, and join our continued efforts to build a destination district.
