Superintendent's Message for February 2025

The month of January was very tame in the weather department, which is quite different from a year ago. This mild weather has helped our building project progress smoothly in Corning.  All the interior floors have been poured and the interior walls are going up quickly.  In early February, drywall installation will begin in most parts of the building.  It is exciting to see how quickly the construction is coming together, especially inside the building.

Late last month, I announced my resignation and will be stepping down at the end of the school year to pursue a new opportunity.  I believe this is a great time to transition the district to a new leader.  The district has enjoyed unusual longevity in leadership, with the past two superintendents serving for over sixteen years combined.  The new leader will inherit new facilities, a strong board, dedicated staff, hardworking students, and a supportive community.  It is truly a great time to be a T-Wolf.

The legislative session is now in full swing and several bills are of particular interest to small rural schools.  One key issue is Supplemental State Aid, which determines the percentage of funding we receive from the state.  Currently, the proposal is for a 2% increase—just enough to keep the lights on but not much more.  We need sufficient funding to pay our teachers fairly and provide a strong curriculum for our students.  Many Iowa schools are facing declining enrollment, and without adequate state funding, districts may have to make significant budget cuts.  While our two districts will be able to manage this year's funding, we need support from the governor and legislators to ensure future stability.

Another topic under discussion is a cell phone ban during instructional time.  Southwest Valley already includes this policy in our handbooks, and we are working on a system for students to turn in their phones at the beginning of class and retrieve them during passing periods. Additionally, the school start date is being debated.  We are hoping to start on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, but if no legislative action is taken, the earliest we can start is on Monday, August 25, 2025.

I hope February is a fantastic month for everyone and that the favorable weather continues to benefit Southwest Valley Schools!
