Southwest Valley May Update: A Time of Reflection and Celebration

May has arrived at Southwest Valley, and with it comes the final stretch of the school year. With just seventeen days remaining before we close out on May 23rd, there’s a lot packed into these final weeks.

This May holds special meaning for me personally, as I reflect on my seven years serving Southwest Valley Schools and enjoy my last full month in the district. Following the June 16th board meeting in Corning, I will be passing the torch to Joe Erickson and bidding farewell to a district I have been honored to serve.

Looking back, I’m proud of all we have accomplished together. Southwest Valley is in a great place, and I feel confident Mr. Erickson will inherit a district with strong boards, dedicated administrators, outstanding teachers, talented students, and supportive communities.

If you’re looking for something to do this month, you won’t be short on opportunities! Head over to the school website and click the calendar icon at the top—there’s an activity nearly every night. A few key events to highlight:

  • Senior Scholarship Night: May 14th

  • Graduation Ceremony: May 18th at 2:00 p.m. in the Activity Center in Corning

The rest of the student body will wrap up the school year on May 23rd, with an early dismissal planned for 11:00 a.m.

After the school year concludes, we’ll begin moving out of our temporary spaces at the United Methodist Church and Corning Public Library. New furniture is arriving for the elementary school, and many of our old pieces will be sent to students in Africa, thanks to a wonderful connection made by Dr. Gruba. Remaining items will be available for purchase at a garage sale on May 30th in the Activity Center parking lot.

We owe a huge thank you to the United Methodist Church and Corning Public Library for their generosity in providing space to us during this school year. The district is planning an open house early next fall to showcase our updated facilities—stay tuned for details.

This marks my 82nd and final article for the website and local newspaper. I want to sincerely thank everyone for the support, collaboration, and memories over the past seven years. Southwest Valley will always be on my radar, and I look forward to cheering on the great things ahead.

Best wishes for a strong finish to the year and continued success in the future!
